I’m really interested in the Japanese hip hop scene, I’m looking to book some big time NYC DJ’s at some Japanese hip hop clubs. I’m not too familiar with the scene so don’t really know where to begin. If anyone knows some promoters for some HipHop venues shoot me an email really looking forward to visiting and doing some parties in japan ( preferably Tokyo) only place I’m a bit familiar with is Club Harlem. Im in japan with my brother and his girlfriend for new years and january, and we plan to go to roppongias its more gaijin territory, do most clubs in roppongi check ids? Do places like gas panic and propaganda check? and which places in roppongi are free entrance?

You’re right.. it’s so annoying. When I show the Tokyo clubs to a friend for the first time, I usually show them that side of things as well.. just to get a sense of how it is.. but definitely with no intention to give into the Nigerian dudes (a close friend of mine is a Nigerian and he’s completely the opposite of that.. but in Roppongi, they are all into that business).

Once a friend of drunken friend of mine dragged me into one of those places that one of those guys suggested.. foreigner hostesses, really sleazy. Got that one drink that we agreed upon and then left as quickly as possible 8)

It is worth noting that Roppongi is an annoying place to go out if you are not in a decent sized group. Large numbers of Nigerian men run the doors of most clubs down Roppongi St, and when traveling down there on a Thursday night I couldnt shake them away, trying to sell me drugs and get me into their strip clubs etc. Ruined the night, and for me, Roppongi in general.

Hi Rika,
I can’t possibly suggest using a fake ID because it’s illegal and all that.
I don’t know in Australia.. but in Japan it’s not very common to have fake IDs (never seen that here).
I guess that you can try.. just make sure that you have a photo ID.. because they really want to see a picture 8)

I’m a Japanese girl but was born and live in sydney. I visit japan every year and last year went out clubbing in roppongi I was 16 then and didn’t get asked for id once. But I really want to try out clubs in shibuya so I’m thinking of using a fake id and it should all be fine right?

Hey Jeff,
Unfortunately I’m not very close to the DJing scene in Tokyo.
I have a couple of friends that do DJing mostly for hobby, on and off, but I’m not sure how it all works.. I’m just a club goer 8)
For booking I guess that there are global DJ booking sites.. you may want to try with those, but I’m not sure how well they work.
If you’ll end up coming for a gig, make sure to let us know 8)
